Artist Statement

My practice highlights the beauty of what is overlooked in the day-to-day. In a society that values over-consumption and constant fast-paced productivity, everyday practices and individual wellbeing do not receive a second thought. Simple moments and rituals, like the drive to work, hand-me-down clothes, walking the dog, and family traditions are the focal points of my pieces. I actively work against the painting tradition of celebrating the grand, wealthy, and elite - or in current contexts, the upper-class influencer luxury lifestyle. My subjects subvert what we are fed through mainstream media outlets about the importance of hustle/grind culture and maximalism.

My artwork celebrates common lived human experiences. I represent what I and so many others already have. I use personal items like my old keys and baggy jeans to illicit feelings of contentment, power, and satisfaction. I celebrate and find humor in life through the portrayal of those I am close with.

To celebrate these subjects, I experiment with bold and playful colors. The emotions of brightness and joy are evident in the lighting in these pieces. The scale of my works is thoughtful and modest, yet within the composition I enlarge and romanticize what is physically small in the material world, highlighting the importance of these objects to me. Although not flashy in size, each surface is built with loving hands to cherish the story told on them. Each step of my process in creating these works is intentional, just as the viewer should be when viewing and reflecting on their personal routines and rituals.
